She Waits
she waits,
in the dark. Alone.
no sounds,
just the lights of passing cars,
driving by and lighting her face with their headlights.
tears are running down her pale face.
She doesn’t have to wait very long for that.
She waits,
to hear the familiar footsteps running up the stairs,
to hear the sound of the matt being lifted to,
to hear a key being found.
the screen door to up,
she waits to hear a key in the door,
the knob turning.
she has to wait forever for that.
She waits to see him,
standing there,
arms open,
tears on his face.
She has to wait forever for that.
She waits,
for the phone to ring,
in the dark,
to hear his voice,
“sorry, I love you.”
She has to wait forever for that.
She waits,
with pills in her closed fist,
in the dark she begins to put them in her mouth,
she waits for them to break apart in her dry mouth.
Crying all the while.
She doesn’t have to wait very long for that.
She waits,
for 25 pills to take effect.
She doesn’t have to wait very long for that.
