Was there a subtitle on this? I can't remember now... I should've made a new icon, but for now, my dear Dr. Bashir will do just fine :)
I have to say, I loved it. I'm not saying it wasn't flawed, but I loved it. I think it's a great rest on the universe without destroying a lot of the interplay between characters that makes the universe great. It had time travel without making me want to kill anyone - a feat in and of itself.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the actors. I'd really had reservations about Karl Urban (dearly and utterly as I love him), but he was an awesome Bones. That said? His dialogue was straight up awful sometimes, the poor guy! Hopefully they'll relax and realize he *isn't* Dee Kelley next time and all will be well. I think there's a lot of potential there. The new Chekov was adorable. I wanted to pinch his cheeks. Simon Pegg was WIN as Scotty. I'm not sure about his midget monkey thing. WTH was that about?! That can stop anytime they want. He's funny on his own, no prop pet/coworkers needed. REALLY.
The new Uhura is gorgeous. I dug her in Pirates of the Caribbean, and I dug her in this. She's hot but a bit more substantial than Nichelle Nichols got to be (at least until the later movies), so that was nice. It was actually possible to see her and Spock hooking up to some degree. I'm willing to allow that even without an external emotional connection, sex is something that's a basic biological drive, and she is someone he could connect to intellectually. So... logical, right? lol
Chris Pine was actually a really great Kirk, a modern take on what Shatner was in the 60s looks-wise. He had the right swagger and bravado, and having Captain Pike as his "dad" figure was actually quite neat. I was very impressed with Zach Quinto as Spock too. He's hotter without his usual eyebrows, and he really did a great job in the role. I'm hoping that as the stories progress (since I'm assuming they will), they don't lose Spock's logical outlook too much. I'm okay with flashes of emotion and impulsiveness because this Spock is different than the old Spock... but too many dynamics would be ruined if it isn't retained to some extent. Plus it creates greater contrast between Spock and Kirk, thus cementing the conflict for the love triangle they're setting up.
Oh, the story? The overall story? And the villain? Who cares. Seriously. Apart from Khan, has a villain EVER mattered in a Trek movie? I see no reason to start caring now.
All in all? This was fun, action-packed, and has a lot of potential. ...but next time they'd better lay off the damned lens flares. Seriously.
