Five drabbles written on behalf of the Home Team for the
mcshep_match Drabble Tree Challenge. (McShep, obviously; oh, let's say PG)
1. Stealing Home (this one's from an AU that's having trouble making it out of my head)
When Rodney stops in front of his apartment door, he can hear the low murmur of voices from within, like someone’s left the TV on. He takes out his keys and cautiously opens the door.
John is sprawled on the couch in front of the TV, eyes closed, one hand curled around Tiv’s back. He lazily opens one eye when Rodney crosses the room.
“Hi,” Rodney says slowly. “I don’t remember giving you a key.”
John just smirks suggestively.
“Also, that’s my cat.”
“She likes me,” John protests.
“What are you doing here, anyway?”
John smiles and says, “Welcome home.”
2. Ever After
“... and they lived happily ever after.” John closed the book and put it down on the floor.
Madison beamed at him.
Rodney snorted derisively. Scientists didn’t believe in ever after. “Do you know how statistically improbable that is? No one is happy all the time. There’s far too many stupid people.”
Madison pouted.
“What he means is,” John explained, “sometimes sad things happen, but people can be mostly happy when they find the right person.”
“Are you an’ Uncle Mer gonna live mostly happy ever after?”
“Yeah,” John said and Rodney decided that some things were worth more than statistics.
3. Hold On
John listened to the heart monitor beep a steady rhythm as he stood beside Rodney’s bed.
“I gave him a sedative,” Carson had said. “He should sleep well tonight.”
But as John watched, Rodney snuffled anxiously. John clenched his fists, trying not to think about what Rodney had gone through. They were home now, they were safe. Another nightmare behind them.
“Get some rest,” Carson said on his way out.
“Just a little longer,” John replied. He reached out and gently took Rodney’s fingers in his hand. Rodney let out a small sigh and his fingers tightened ever so slightly.
4. A Long Day
It’s been a long day, what with being chased back through the ‘gate by angry natives only to find there’s a Wraith ship approaching and something’s wrong with the conduits that connect the ZPMs to the city. So now, another crisis averted thanks to his under-appreciated brilliance, Rodney staggers back to his room to get some rest.
John is standing shiftily outside his door.
“Can’t it wait? Because even geniuses need sleep and it’s been a long day.”
John just leans in to press his lips against Rodney’s, one hand resting lightly on Rodney’s chest. “You’re brilliant, you know that?”
5. Stealth Dating
“Excuse me? Since when have we been dating?”
“Oh, a few months now. You didn’t notice?”
“Oh, right. Sorry. How could I have interpreted your suicidal tendencies and flings with any Ascended women who cross your path as anything but a courtship ritual?”
“Hey. We’ve had dinner dates. And we watch movies. And play video games.”
“But we do that all the time.”
“Exactly. Come on, Teyla and Ronon noticed.”
“What? But we haven’t-”
John pressed his lips against Rodney’s.
“That better?”
“I... Yes. I’m still not convinced of your methodology, though.”
“It worked. That’s what counts, right?”
“Yeah.”
