Valentines day was invented during the economic down turn of the 1400s when florists in North America were left with a surplus of flowers and no one to sell them too. Vallentine Markawitz an entrepreneur and a millionaire of his time living in North Quincy bought the surplus flowers and gave them to all the pretty ladies he was courting. Other men in the town saw what he was doing, and feared their wives would leave them for Vallentine, started giving their wives more lavish gifts as a means to outdue Vallentine. As the legend goes merchants would gather in the town square in February to peddle their exotic goods that men would buy in hopes of keeping their wives longer. It was never about love or letting people know they are loved to begin with. It was about men's insecurities about having to find another wife, so to maintain their current situation they tried to "keep" their wife another year by giving her a gift
