kwoooooopi 1 Hour Writing Challenge, 5th Round.

fandom: Super Junior
pairing: CinHae (or, would have been)
theme: free write - anything goes
summary: Donghae wasn’t often given to sensible urges, nor carried through with them.
notes: AU, would have been sci-fi, and was going to contain robots. Had I managed more within the time limit 8D;

The streets were slick, still wet from the downpour of rain that had stopped not just fifteen minutes ago. It was still overcast, however, the clouds thick and heavy and lurking above with the threat of more rain.

Donghae didn’t mind the rain. Whilst others were shaking their umbrellas of excess water and closing them neatly away, or hurrying out from the safety of doorways and beneath awnings, he was savouring the sound made as his shoes splashed through puddles of water, and shivering with every cold drop of rainwater that dripped from his hair and down the back of his neck. Rain made him feel alive, buzzing, almost electric, and sometimes that was exactly what Donghae needed to feel.

It was probably because he was looking down at his own feet more than he was at where he was going, that Donghae even noticed in the first place. He was on his way home, absently wondering what kind of take-out he should call in for dinner, and mentally running through the list of tonights television programmes that he’d memorised from the TV guide, when a shock of red caught his attention. So red, that at first, for a crazy moment, Donghae had mistaken it for fire.

When he stopped and turned back to look, he realised that he couldn’t have been more wrong.

It was a quiet street, a bit of an alley between two buildings in actual fact, a narrow throughway to the next street, a shortcut for Donghae, so his first thought upon seeing the person sitting up - slumping, was probably a more accurate word - against the wall (dirty, and he absently noticed that the graffiti tag decorating it was a new one) was that this person must have just been some kind of drunk. Or junkie. Which wasn’t in itself a surprising sight, not with the direction the city was falling - quickly, and thoroughly - into decline.

Still, there was something about this person, with that shock of red hair, that drew Donghae just a little closer. Against everything his parents had ever told him to do and not to do, he took a few steps closer, and realised two things in that instance: this person was man, and he was unconscious.

Sleeping off some high, or something, the reasoning, sensible portion of Donghae’s mind told him. It was a very, very small part of him, however, Donghae wasn’t often given to sensible urges, nor carried through with them. A few more shuffling steps closer and he could see that this man was kind of young, too, about his own age, if not a few years older, maybe.

“Hey.” The sound of his own voice surprised him a little; Donghae hadn’t planned on speaking. Really, that reasonable, sensible part of him was telling him to just leave, go away and forget about it, this guy was just some junkie, one of those many that he read about in the papers, saw on the news, that everyone knew got themselves into these situations.

But it was that red hair. It was the look on his face, that kept Donghae from simply walking away and forgetting about it, as he really knew that he should.

“Hey,” he said again, a little louder this time. His throat felt dry, and he swallowed, wet his lips and spoke again. “Are you alright?” There was no one else around, and he reasoned, he would walk away as soon as he got some kind of response, even just a little stirring, from this man.

But there was nothing.

Donghae frowned. “Are you okay?” This time, he nudged the man’s leg with his foot. Gently, cautiously, ready to bolt at the sign of any trouble.

There was nothing. No response, no movement. Nothing. Donghae did it again, a little harder. The man’s arm, one which had been resting on his lap, moved at the slight shaking of his body, slipped and fell against the dirty pavement. There was a strange clink, an almost metallic sound, but Donghae was already several paces back, wary, and it took him several moments to realise he’d even heard the strange, out-of-place sound.
