My great aunt had a bed similiarly carved but it wasn't a canopy. It was an heirloom, and the headboard was 8 feet high with birds and animals carved into it. It was the best bed i've ever slept in.
Canopy beds have always fascinated me, it's like the Victorians knew how much fun building forts in your bed could be! (Aside from the heat-retention and privacy thing)
In Western society there may be a inverse correlation between overt sexual repression and ornate craftsmanship. I think time machine technology will eventually destroy the economy of the 19th century. :)
