There's a nice sense of space in this. Are you using binaural mics now?

Yes, though the pastiche of the base stereo samples is only one layer here. We just used the generic little 'T' microphone that came with the recorder. Not much separation.

it's not only the separation that is important for good binaural effect - the impedance of the two mics should be matched. that's what makes them expensive.

I once heard that the way Core Sound assembles these, is to buy a large supply of "identical" capsule microphones, then sort through them and find pairs with closely matched impedance.

How is your friend planning to build them?

Basically the same. He is member of a few field recording forums and in fact was already familiar with Core Audio and what they sell. He said another of his friends had been bugging him to make a microphone, so he ordered a slew of parts and is putting them together.
