'the administration is also working to shift the blame away from the White House and toward officials of New Orleans and Louisiana who, as it happens, are Democrats'

yes, because why take the blame for anything? i'm doing this from now on, after seeing the white house do it for the past 5 years. 'you see, i didn't knock up your daughter, sir. it was the democrats and faulty intelligence that did it.'

The language needed to dissent has been so effectively neutralized that there's scarcely any way to complain that they won't have an immediate answer for.

i've noticed this. they also have this excellent tactic in which they ask every opposing question of themselves first and make them sound completely ridiculous. rumsfeld is best at this. it makes reporters scared to ask these questions as they'll sound stupid and the public doesn't ask because it sounds as if they were answered.

I think Bush's inarticulate speaking manner actually helps him, in this respect. Since it is understood that he can't formulate coherent sentences, it's very difficult to pin him down on 'straight answers.' Like how he frequently answers with non-sequitors. 'Is he really that stupid? Should I ask him the question again?'

I don't have much faith in the man's intelligence, but I am confident in believing his handlers take full advantage of modern theories of linguistics and information science. It almost doesn't even matter what he says, and they know it.

It feels terribly strange to live in such an age as this.

It's certainly interesting, in the Chinese sense. But I get the impression this sort of thing never really goes away; the focus of the popular imagination only shifts. As in so many things, I think the presentation of the material is key, when it comes to public response. A different personality could probably have 'sold' most Bush administration policies, even to the Left. When you consider the massive, mechanized loss of life that continuously takes place (most recently) in non-Western countries, it helps to put things in perspective. But scarcely cheers you (that is, me) up.

Yes, the cycle of valueless (though I suppose "genetically desireable" as in the human need for hierarchy) "leadership" seems neverending, but it has rarely been so blatantly... ah... absurd. I mean some of the Roman emperors had sex with animals and relatives at open air parties, but... damn my train of thought fell right off the tracks and into the river. I think you know where I was heading.

Yes. The Bush smirk alone will doubtless inspire novels, a hundred years from now.
