It makes the last couple hours of work in the morning bearable.

I remember reading how GG heard this recording on an out-of-tune radio and thought he it was brilliant. He was like, who is this? Seconds later, he realized it was his own work and instantly began cataloguing its flaws.

if I may get off the Glenn Gould topic for a moment, I just picked this up, and have been finding it absolutely stunning. I don't understand the title ("inspired by...?") but the performance is stunning, even if not technically pyrotechnic. it makes up for my disappointment at the third Silk Road Ensemble disc.

From some of the information given at Amazon:

'For this project, Ma engaged the talents of artists in different fields--ranging from a landscape artist to a Kabuki actor and figure skaters--to produce six short films as a visual correlative for the highly distinctive character of each suite. While the success of the films in illuminating Bach's creativity is decidedly uneven, Ma brings the music itself to life with a searing, quasi-vocal eloquence.'

I have not heard this recording but now I want to track it down.

With regard to your "Outage" piece, do you prefer the Gould recordings of the Goldberg Variations and French Suites? For the Goldbergs, I prefer either Gould recording to any other, but I still haven't decided on a favorite French Suites recording.

I do prefer Gould. I have always felt a strong connection to the way he interprets Bach, as my own approach to playing while I was still taking instruction was often unorthodox in terms of dynamics. When I listen to Gould it feels the same as playing the music itself, if that makes any sense. This is not to make any claims on being in Gould's league in terms of actual skill... ;)
