Also.. It is really ironic that
Pi Day (in a weird word play sense) is such a great day for Cake Eaters news.
First we have the fact that Jayce Bartok, actor/writer, explained the title in an interview. I will post the tile explanation here. Because it's charming and quirky and he's a little adorable. And we were right. I still like my 'let them eat cake' theory. But you know. His is better.
But we totally got the part where it was tongue in cheek and ironic and perfect and definitely not.. Stark and realistic and like a splash of cold water which is.. Not what it needed to be. Bartok: 1 Crazy!Bats!Masterson: 0 (Not that she's not brilliant and a great actress and director and I don't respect her immensely, because I do.. But, seriously.. I mean.. Maybe she's had a couple of drinks or was tired or something when that guy interviewed her. It was at an after party, I think.)
"The Cake Eaters really was a term that was used where I grew up to describe the people that really have gotten it; their life and dreams have come through and have been fulfilled. They are the Golden Boys; the in crowd almost. I thought it was a great title because it applies to the irony of these people in this town that certainly don't have all of their cake and certainly not eating it too. Through the course of the film they sort of achieve that, they get their dreams fulfilled in a small way." --Jayce Bartok Also:
The Cake Eaters is premeiring at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. Here is the ticket info, for anyone who thinks they might show up. Though, you know. It really, really, really pisses me off and makes me want to rant horrifically about corporate America and the fact that an INDEPENDENT film festival is sponsored so heavily by American Express that their card holders get a fucking WEEK'S worth of time to buy single tickets online and so many tickets... I am actually a loss for what to say about that, here? I know they need money, but seriously? That's.. Pretty.. Corporate. And. Hell. Why don't they just join hands with Starbucks, Wal-Mart, McDonald's and George W. Bush, get a bag of Freedom Fries and call it a success?
Damn.
But, anyway, rant aside. Everyone please, please let me know if you're going. I'm not. I just really want to know. And if you want me to organize a meet up, I can. I mean. We're not really that close a community, but, hell, you're all in the same theatre, you may as well all squee about Stanford together.
Also: pay close attention and tell me what's great about it. I have great, great hope for this. I wish every film had conflicting titles! It tells you the whole story!
Oh, and PS: Some critic at SXSW really hated Flakes. Which kind of sucks, but I'm not really payting attention to it. He kept saying it was smug and self-satifying. Basically, he calls it pretentious. But then I read his other reviews, and he kind of just rags in indie film a lot. So what I'm getting from him is: He thinks indie film is smug, self-satisfying, and pretentious. Then, um, precious, why are you at an indie film festival? If it's beacause you think Deschanel is hot? Wrong answer. Of course, everything he says could be totally valid. I just, you know. You can't really read reviews until you've seen the film yourself. Then you can decide whether the guy is an asshole or not.
XOXO
