For my sonic arts class we had to write a paragraph or two about why we like the music that we like. I thought it might be of interest to someone here, so why not post it? It would just sit and rot as a .txt file on my hard drive otherwise. Why not set it free on the Internet?

I like music that accomplishes one or more of the following things: it makes me think, it makes an emotional impact on me, or it makes me shake my ass. A piece of music doesn’t have to do all these things for me to like it, but the three categories are usually interconnected to some degree. For instance, a heartfelt rock song might not make me feel anything if I can’t detect that some deep thought has gone into the lyrics and arrangement. Or a hip hop track with a great groove might not make me want to dance if it doesn’t pack an emotional punch. Or a carefully constructed laptop composition might not really intrigue me if my body isn’t engaged at all.

The bottom line is that I like lots of different music for lots of different reasons. All music doesn’t have to be fun or easy or even pleasing in the traditional sense. It is certainly okay for music to challenge my listening skills and make me work to enjoy it. However, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing when music IS fun or easy. Often times the ability of an artist to create something that is powerful while still being easily accessible is more exciting to me than one that sees difficulty as a necessary part of depth. The important thing to me is that, in the end, there is some kind of payoff for my mind, heart, body, or some combination thereof.
