Advice, please?

I am new to this community and I am new to stamping. It is not very diffused over here (Italy) :-(
I am writing to ask for advice. I have recently purchased these two items:
I have tried using them, but the spheres on the little 'thingy' (I'm sorry, I don't know its name in English) left marks on the back of the cardboard. Is it normal? Did I do anything wrong? Also, how do I use it, do I rotate it or do I go into straight movements?
