An End and a Beginning

Tuesday was my last day at the Magnet School. I taught almost all the art classes that we had between Monday and Tuesday. I helped the other teacher transition into her new position. I created a curriculum with specific objectives for each project at each grade level. I talked about student behaviors, I designed the Shi Nen Kai (Japanese New Year) T-shirt, I co-taught an observational drawing lesson between science and art, and I also taught interdisciplinary studies with Physical Education, Science, and Japanese.

And in return, I received the best send-off ever. The Japanese teacher brought muffins/donuts/coffee to the staff room to celebrate, the PE teacher gave me a bouquet of flowers (with sunflowers in it!), and I received a heartfelt thoughtful note from one of my fifth grade students. :)

As you should know, I acquired another Long-Term sub position at the elementary school adjacent to the Magnet School. I was scheduled to work from the middle of February till June, but it looks like I will be starting much sooner. This coming Tuesday, I will start shadowing the art teacher at that school, and probably start the following week or sooner. I am actually not nervous at all. I'm ready to jump in and start teaching because after all my experience at the Magnet School, there's no reason to be scared. I mean, yes there is a new schedule to learn, new student names to learn, more meetings to attend, new places to travel to, but it's still essentially doing what I like to do and feel most comfortable teaching.

This weekend I get the chance to hang out with some very close friends I haven't seen in awhile and I'm excited about that. I didn't end up getting a big break between jobs, but I practically have my winter break in February completely mapped out. Look for me at the Anti-Valentines Day Ball in NYC, followed by a Medeski, Martin, and Wood concert (also in NYC).
