Fight or Flight

Juliet heard something outside in the woods as she stood on the back porch of her in-laws cabin. Edmunds parents had owned this property for years and she tried to come up at least once a year. She had begun to hate being around him lately…the affairs, the lies. Not to mention the violence that Ed had started committing. Being able to get away from everything was a more than just a bonus of being out in the country. The sound again came from inside the thick…Juliet could swear that she heard a woman’s voice. She walked into the cabin picking up the shotgun off the wall…she had no idea how to shoot the damn thing but she didn’t want to take any chances. She stepped down off the porch and her ears were met by what she was sure of was an outcry for help. Juliet broke out into a run to the edge of the trees.

“Fight or flight Juliet.” She said to herself knowing that her normal response was to flee…but also knowing that it sounded like someone needed help, and she was a doctor. She sprinted into the woods listening for a semblance of the sounds she had heard before. Suddenly she heard a voice from behind her.

“Watch out!” The voice cried out, Juliet didn’t think just swung around and shot the gun.

“BOOM.” The shotgun barked bucking hard into Juliet’s shoulder. She watched as a large grizzly bear hit the ground with a thud. Behind the bear there was a young blonde woman standing with her hands in the air.

“Don’t shoot…” She said and Juliet noticed that she still had the gun to her shoulder. She moved the gun until the barrel touched the ground.

“Is everyone alright?” Juliet asked and the blonde who still looked a little rattled shook her head.

“No…its my mother…” She said motioning for Juliet to follow her. The doctor trailed the girl until they came upon another young woman and an older woman who was bleeding from her head. Juliet knelt down and looked into the injured woman’s face. She exchanged looks with her daughters who backed up to give Juliet room to work.

“Are you alright?” She asked and the redhead smiled with a nod. “Yeah…it was nothing, the bear came upon us suddenly…swatted me a good one.” She said and Juliet nodded.

“Did more than that…I think that you might need stitches…” She said and the woman put her hand on Juliet’s. The doctor was startled by the icy touch the woman had…she looked into her eyes noting their black color.

“Why don’t you all come back to my cabin…I’ll fix everything.” She said and was met by the warmest smile she had ever seen. Juliet walked ahead as the two young women helped their mother back to the cabin.

“Thank you so much for your help…” She said as Juliet tended to her wounds.

“My name is Esme Cullen…” She said and Juliet nodded.

“I’m Juliet…Juliet Burke.” She said noting as her other guests nervously paced the floor.

“Your mother will be fine…” Juliet said to them, and the one with shorter brown hair smiled brightly.

“Thank you…” She said and Juliet turned back to Esme.

“Alice…take your sister outside, get her some fresh air…” She said and she took the blondes hand and led her out to the back yard.

“Rosalie gets nervous around strangers…” Esme said and Juliet nodded.

“Can I get you something…water, anything?” She asked but Esme shook her head.

“No thank you…you have been far too kind to my family and I already.” She said and Juliet smiled.

“Its no problem…but if you don’t mind me asking; why were you in my backyard?” She asked and Esme again looked into Juliet’s eyes.

“We got lost on a hike…and got turned around…and you know the rest.” She said the sound of the back door causing her to turn back around. Rosalie was holding a canteen.

“Es…er mother here is something for you.” She said holding out the canteen for her mother. Juliet watched as Esme took a long drink from the container. The redhead looked up at the doctor who noticed immediately the change in her guest’s eye color. How could she not…before they were dark black orbs turned now to a golden brown. Her eyes were trained on Esme’s she had questions, but she didn’t want the answers…too outrageous to even think about.

“You are welcome to stay here tonight…” Juliet said knowing that there was more to these three than they were letting on but the truths that she knew was that she had never met a warmer soul.

The End
