Once the school year is finished, Jack begrudgingly allows Lane and Gracie to start “dating.”
It’s obvious how much she likes Lane, but he’s clearly terrified to reciprocate her affections in front of Jack.
As he should be. If he wants to live to see his 15th birthday.
Out of a protective father’s eyeshot, things are another story, though. As is Jack’s reaction.
About a block from the apartment, walking home from his office, he sees Gracie shoot out the main entrance of the building, fly down the steps to the crosswalk. He’s just about to call her name, wondering where she’s going in such a mad rush, when the light changes and she takes off.
Then he sees Lane across the street, stretching on a park bench.
He stops in his tracks, watches Gracie run into his arms, a smile a mile wide on her face. Lane kisses her sweetly and it’s as if someone punched him right in the gut.
Unable to watch another second, he returns home in a daze, meanders back to Liz’s office, collapsing defeatedly on her couch.
“Rough day?”
He sighs so melodramatically Liz laughs. She tosses her glasses on the desk, comes to his side. “What’s up?”
“Gracie’s in love.”
“She’s fourteen. Is that even possible?”
“I saw her, Lemon. Outside the Park with Lane.”
“They’re going for a run, not eloping.”
He pokes at the pillows, pouting unabashedly. Liz touches the side of his face, drawing his eyes towards her. She shifts further down on the couch, has him lie down, put his head in her lap.
“Lane’s a good kid. At least she didn’t fall for some jerk, right?”
“Yeah, but it still sucks.”
Liz kisses his forehead, knowing exactly what he’s thinking. “She still loves you, too, Jack. She always will.”
