I know I know that I need to post about which fictional characters I would sleep with but the list is long and I am figuring it so I don't get in trouble with the girlfriend.  The tivo arrived on Wednesday and there are already problems ( Read more... )

Hi, I run tivolovers and TiVoLovers.com Are you using the TiVo WiFi adapter?

Unfortunately you won't be able to do the setup until it can call home - either via the network or a phone line.

I am using a wireless adapter. The problem seems to be that I don't have a router in my apartment because I am using a a log-in system with my apartment complex. I have been talking to TIVO and my ISP for the past couple of days trying to put in the IP address myself. It keeps saying that the DHCP server can not be located. My ISP(tech guy Bill) says that he can tell that something is happening on their end and that I was even given an IP address. I tried it and it didn't work. Do you have any idea what is causing this?

That is a common red herring error if you've mis-entered the WEP, or WPA, key. If the WEP key is wrong the TiVo can see the network and tries to contact the DHCP server, but since the encryption key is wrong it fails and you get that error. But it is confusing because it doesn't say something like 'Bad WEP key'.

Make sure you've selected the right network and have entered the WEP key correctly - I strongly recommend entering the WEP key using the hex version and not trying to enter it as a pass-phrase. Not all systems generate the hex from the pass-phrase the same way, so that doesn't always work.

So no security at all? Well, you mentioned they had to enter the MAC, so I guess they're using a MAC whitelist. (Which is next to no security, since MAC spoofing is trivial.)

I guess make sure the MAC is entered in their system correctly. The WiFi adapter you're using is on TiVo's supported list, right? http://www.tivo.com/adapters (I really recommend using a TiVo-branded adapter, they're MUCH faster than any other with the TiVo.)

If the DHCP error persists, can you use a static IP and use the manual configuration option?
