Humorous Homo Sapiens

So, Judd Apatow's third film, Funny People is a pretty good hit. From early trailers, I suspected this could be Adam Sandler's big break into serious awards consideration, but coming back from the film, I'm not so sure. The drama that this movie tries to generate is downplayed in comparison to the hilarious stand-up acts given by everyone and the realization that every character in the film is a jerk, Sandler's especially. From Jason Schwartzmann's upscale, smug sitcom star to Leslie Mann's married yet morally-wavering former girlfriend, each character ends up coming off as an insensitive dickhead. Even Seth Rogen's character, who is the movie's true 'good guy', lies to a friend to get ahead and keep a quality position to himself. It all resolves in a kind-of ok manner, and all the performances are great, but...I think I was looking for something more. That being said, the film has plenty of laugh-out-loud funny moments, often back-to-back considering the characters are all presenting their material, and I'd suggest it as a film to go and have a good time at.
