Warning for those of you who love food:
Last week for lunch I made
this. It serves two so I ate it for lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday I worked from home because of the parade for the Mavs downtown, so I ate lunch at home. After work I went to pick up some things from Target and stopped at Lenny's Sub Shop for a sandwich and chips. I came home and ate, but as I ate the potato chips, about halfway through the bag, I noticed that each chip I ate had a horrible aftertaste. This did not overly concern me and I thought perhaps I just got an off bag. I went to bed and went to work Friday morning. I didn't have breakfast but had a latte late in the morning. At lunchtime I went to Jason's Deli and had soup and salad. As I was walking back to my office I notice a bitter taste in my mouth. I thought maybe the greens I'd eaten had been very bitter. That night I went to REI to buy some Nalgene bottles to take water with me for the Habitat build on Saturday. I also got an oatmeal raisin CLIF bar (one of those energy bars for camping) because I was very hungry. As I ate one or two bites I notice that each bite was followed by a disgusting bitter aftertaste. It's hard for me to describe, but the only thing I can think to liken it to is if you've ever had a stomach virus and thrown up water (not water you just drank, like a hangover vomit) but like you drank water a while ago and you vomit and it's brown and the vomit taste is sort of acidic and really bitter. THAT is the taste I had in my mouth after consuming ANYTHING. I came home and googled and found stuff about mouth infections and jaundice and such, BUT I also found several posts about people
getting this after consuming pine nuts. And it's a delayed reaction so it doesn't start until like 1 or 2 days AFTER you eat the pine nuts. Now I have never had this problem before with pine nuts, but I don't think I've eaten that many (a good quarter cup) pine nuts over 2 days. Also I may have eaten a different species of pine nuts previously. And the other possibility is that the pine nuts were rancid as they tend to go bad fairly quickly. I kept them in my pantry (a cool dark place), but they were probably more than 6 weeks old. Anyway, I did want to make y'all aware of this. You might want to check where your pine nuts come from if you buy them. It seems only Asian species are problematic and this may not happen to everyone. I'm on day 3 now and it's not as strong as it was yesterday. It may take up to a week to stop. It's not terrible or anything but it does take some of the enjoyment out of eating, so if you enjoy eating, it's something to consider.
