please excuse the length, i think i overcooked it
but read on (and enjoy?)
i have decided to stand my ground and not vote for president (although, i am pumped for local and state elections) - since no candidate deserves my vote, no candidate will receive my vote - maybe when i’m in the booth i'll be compelled to vote for ralph nader, the green party candidate, the communist or just someone with a cool name - i had been planning on voting for john kerry, which i really wasn’t comfortable with - why - because he sucks - he's a career politician and just like bush he has a terrible record and i disagree with him on many issues that i consider important - if i could vote bush out of office i would (in a second) but i can't, i can only vote kerry in - and supporting kerry in this way is like justifying the end despite the means (which reminds me too much of a recent war i didn’t support for the same reason - ends don’t justify means) - maybe the fact that i know ny is safely going to kerry is what allows me to be so stubborn - because i'm pretty sure i would feel differently if i lived in a state that either candidate had a chance of winning - too many people are voting for kerry not because they actually like him but because they dislike bush that much - i don’t want to be one of those people and i look forward to the day when a real (wo)man runs for president (2044,sal) and i don’t have to choose between two assmonkeys
on a lighter note lets take a moment to honor some of the best lyrical poets of modern music - i say modern music (as in post 1965 lets say) because there are too many badass jazz, folk and blues musicians who really deserve the respect that i am too ignorant to give them
bob dylan:
now i wish i could write you a melody so plain
that could hold you dear lady from going insane
that could ease you and cool you and cease the pain
of your useless and pointless knowledge
morrissey:
i want to live and i want to love
i want to catch something that i might be ashamed of
shane macgowan:
then the winter came down and i loved it so dearly
the pubs and the bookies where you'd spend all your time
and the old men that were singing
when the roses bloom again
and turn like the leaves
to a new summertime
tom waits:
i hung my old rain-soaked jacket
on some old barbed wire
poured cold rusty water
on a miserable fire
i pulled on trouble’s braids
the creek was swollen by daybreak and i could just barely see
and i floated downstream on an old dead tree
and i also want to give some honorable mentions just because - to uncle joe strummer, everyone's pal ian mackaye and john doe (who is my idol, not yours) - and also to bad religion for creating some of the best (and smartest - greg graffin has a phd in some science/evolution) punk ballads - with lines like 'challenge convention and radiate your splendor' you cant go wrong - plus they have a song about entropy - the idea that everything moves towards chaos - what a beautiful thing - and you can see it in action all around you - the side of the road, our government, your very own bedroom
to accuse someone of liking something just because its ‘punk’ is a shot below the belt - it’s definitely a minus ten (at least) for the person ignorant (and in this case hypocritical) enough to say it - alcohol you make people speak such nonsense
for those of you who don’t know - tea is ten times the drink coffee could ever hope to be - i don’t drink coffee - i have never been a 'coffee drinker' - aside from numerous occasions when i've tasted various coffees or coffee drinks, i have only drunk three cups of (black) coffee in my life and all three occasions were because i had to stay awake not because i wanted coffee - and really what can i say - unless you've tasted some of the crazy teas from around the world and felt their awesome effects on body, mind and soul than you can’t argue - the essence of coffee is caffeine, which is just bad form - the essence of tea is something much more ellusive and i realize thats just too intense for some people
