beware the "anyway"

my beef with using the word "anyway" in conversation is that it implies that whatever was said before it is somehow less significant and less important.  Okay, maybe the word itself doesn't do that, but the person who uses "anyway" (and the much worse colloquial "anyways" - but don't even get me started on that soapbox!) dismisses whatever was said and shifts the focus back to themselves/their point. It bothers me when people use this as a bridge in non-connected topics to bring the focus back to themselves. I think "anyway" is perfectly acceptable when used correctly, to act as an adverb between two thoughts/phrases, but when it's used arbitrarily and erroneously just because someone is trying to talk about somethign else? That really drives me insane.

I had an ex who would always use "anyways" (AUGH!) when he talked, and it was so excessive that he would even "anyways" himself in the middle of a story, with no actual reason to do so. I have a friend now who I love, but their overuse of the word "anyway" is systematically clawing at my soul each time they do it.

Moral of the story: think before you "anyway." Better yet, leave it out. Chances are, you never really needed it anyway. ;)
