At Manticore, they had been trained to avoid their emotions. They had been taught that emotions were negative, yet that hadn’t prevented them from feeling emotions. In the end, it had been their emotions that had lead them to escape. The first time that Max felt compassion had been on that fateful night when Hannah had taken her in. Even though Max had only been in Hannah’s protection for a short while, she learned a lesson that stayed with her all of her life. It was a lesson that taught her more than any of the lessons that Manticore had drilled into her head for the eleven years that she had been there.
