When he finds her in the hospital he still doesn't understand. Is it really her, is this really him, is this a place at all? But he can feel her, chilled skin under his fingers.
"You saw me get attacked?" she asks him.
"Sort of... I couldn't stop it," Henry says.
"I know," she says, as if she really believes him, wants him to stop feeling any guilt.
When he touches her back, the bloody numbers cut into it, she yells.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"He carved numbers into your back. Like he did to the others," Henry says.
"Oh God... why?"
She is crying, and he doesn't blame her. But maybe she is still alive somehow, if he can just get her out of here. For a moment he wonders what would happen if he just left her here and saved himself. He touches her broken arm next, lifting it.
"Stop it, damn it, that hurts."
"It does hurt?" he says. Pain is real here too then, just like it is for him.
"Of course it hurts!"
"He hit your arm?" Henry isn't sure how to convey sympathy. He spends more time with cameras than people, and now suddenly people are appearing around him just to die and he doesn't know the things to say. There are no guidelines for this even for people more used to human communication.
"I don't remember everything." Eileen's voice. "But he hit me, and cut me, and ... he stepped on my arm, like he was trying to break it, and then it just hurt too much for me to take."
For a moment Henry holds her undamaged hand, squeezes it as if he can somehow reassure her that she isn't in hell, when really she is. He feels powerless in front of this broken woman. When she stands up she sways, looking a little ridiculous in that dress with all those bruises, and now he knows he couldn't have left her here for Walter Sullivan to find her. The only way out is down, to find out if pain is real for the man who is killing them.
