As she took in the sight of Angel one last time, Cordelia was struck by how much had time had passed and how they both had changed. She could remember when she had ended their relationship and had returned to Sunnydale briefly. When she had come back, they had discovered that Darla was alive again and had been drugging him. Of course, she and Wesley had worked to help Angel solve the problem and Angel Investigations had been reformed. But everything had changed between them and there was a distance between them that hadn’t existed before. It seemed that every time they were about to admit their feelings for one another, something interfered. And now she had to say goodbye to the only person that she had ever loved.
She regretted all the missed chances between them and wonder at all of the things that could have been. Cordelia shook her head as she realized that she was attempting to prolong the inevitable. She didn’t want to leave him without knowing if he had really loved her but she was still too afraid to ask. He silently watched her as she turned to towards the door. Suddenly she turned to face him again and she pulled him into an embrace and kissed him.
The kiss told her everything that she had ever wanted to know. He had loved her even if the time had never been right for them. It had been true love, and even now as he responded to her kisses, Cordelia knew that he still loved her just as she still loved her. She held back the tears that she wanted to shed and pulled away from him before she turned and left the room. Her mission was complete and she had to leave even if it was the hardest thing that she had ever done.
