The bandage that she wound around his arm was white colour and she focused her attention on it. She counted the number of times that she wrapped it around his arm so that she wouldn’t have to look into his eyes. How many times had this man risked his life to save her life or somebody’s life and he received no gratitude for it? She didn’t know and she was ashamed to think of how often she had relied on him to help save her and the boys when they got into trouble. Now he had blown his cover with the Death Eaters to save her because she had wanted to see her mother. Hermione knew that she had been selfish, especially since she had known that she was a target because of her friendship with Harry. She wanted to tell Professor Snape that she was worthless and that he should have kept his cover so that he could continue fighting the Dark Lord.
His silence seemed to prove to her that she was correct in her assumptions. She sighed heavily as she thought of what she should say to him but there didn’t seem to be anything that she could say to him. It was his voice that broke her concentration and caused her to look into his eyes.
”You are not selfish by wanting to see your mother one more time.”
”But I should have known better.”
”No Miss Granger, it is I who should have known better.”
”What do you mean?” Hermione asked.
”I’ve suspected for sometime that the Dark Lord knew that I was playing both sides. I believe that this was a planned ambush rather than accidental.”
”Oh,” Hermione replied unsure of what to say.
As she tilted her head again and focused on the bandage, Snape wanted to pull her into his arms and comfort her. She had looked heartbroken at his words, and he wasn’t quite sure what he could do to reassure her that everything would return to normal. But they both knew that it wouldn’t, this time it was Snape who sighed heavily as he pulled her onto his lap and held her. He might not be able to give her the love that he possessed for her, but he could at least give her the little comfort that he had left to offer her. Her sobs pierced him as he whispered soothing words to her. She had lost both her parents that night, yet he knew that she would continue to fight at Potter’s side. For now his comfort would have to do and perhaps one day when the war was over, he might be able to profess his love for her. Until then he would do his best to protect her from the Death Eaters.
