Disturber of the Peace

It had been a long night. A very long night. While it had been nice to catch up with many people he’d worked with over the years but hadn’t seen much of recently, he’d made enough of a fool of himself (and Sam on a few occasions) to last a lifetime let alone one evening.

And yet, throughout the foot-in-mouth comments and clumsy steps, Sam was still at his side when all was said and done. He was surprised a bit by that fact, but then again, she’d stuck by him for close to a decade now. One more evening of the same probably wouldn’t tip the scales. Probably. It was comforting that tonight didn’t seem to be the breaking point, though.

“So…” Jack started and promptly trailed off as they drove back to Sam’s house. He glanced over at her profile, still worried about the fallout. She’d had her revenge once already, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t entitled to more. “We still good?”

“Were we ever not?”

“Umm… maybe?” Sam let out a short laugh and chewed her lower lip thoughtfully.

“Well, certainly there have been times when I’ve wanted nothing to do with you, but tonight was… well, it was nice.”

“Nice?!” Jack couldn’t believe his ears.

“Yeah. What’s a party without a few unabashed drunks and some questionable dancing?”

“So you’re not mad?”

“I think you know me well enough to know that this isn’t mad. If I were mad, you wouldn’t be in this car right now.”

“Good point.”

The rest of the car ride was filled with comfortable small talk, mostly about people neither of them had heard from in years. By the time they pulled into Sam’s driveway, Jack had no doubt that he was still definitely okay in Sam’s book. The chatting had been a great indicator, but the kiss she initiated as she turned off the ignition did an even better job laying his fears to rest.

“Sorry I made you puke.”

“Sorry I… sorry I even opened my mouth.”

“Shall we go in?”

At that, Jack couldn’t help but smirk.

Inside, Sam had shed the coat and the heels almost instantly. Jack still couldn’t help but think just how gorgeous she looked all dressed up, even without the shoes. He fully intended on telling her so, too. He started off slowly, not wanting to mince his feelings with such a delicate topic. Things escalated from there, and soon he had no doubt Sam knew exactly what he was trying to communicate.

“Hey, guys, get a room.”

Both were so surprised they literally jumped out of each others’ arms. It took them a few moments to figure out the voice had come from the couch they had been ‘standing’ behind for the past few minutes.

“Cassie?!?!”

“I thought you weren’t coming ‘til tomorrow morning…?” Jack asked, tucking his shirt back in his pants.

“It is tomorrow morning.”

“Still, shouldn’t you be in bed? Cass?” Sam’s voice had that warning edge to it that Jack had quickly learned never to ignore. Obviously, so had Cassie, college student or not. She was out of the room faster than a spook.

“We should probably continue this somewhere more private,” Jack whispered against Sam’s ear. He grinned as she shivered.

“I like the way you think.”

No way was Cassie going to screw up this part of her evening!
