House M.D. -- Greg House/Brittany House -- 2 Ficlets

Apr 13, 2006 14:55

Title: Begin To Fall
Characters/Pairing: Greg House/Brittany House
Prompt: #4 -- Intimacy
Word Count: 345
Rating: G
Summary: One spring night in Los Angeles.
Author's Notes: This is spun entirely off of a story J.J. Redick told the other day on FOX Sports' The Best Damn Sports Show Period, and so I have to thank him for borrowing it here and making my own use of it.

Greg House has a jealous streak.

He and his wife are sitting at a table in some club in Los Angeles, a place recommended by a friend of hers, nursing a few drinks. She seems to have friends everywhere, even though she hasn't lived here in over a year. That's one of the things he loves about her, and one of the things that makes his jealousy flare.

She's a popular woman. But she never lets it go to her head. Everyone is treated like family. Everyone is looked after. She's always looking at you and listening, giving a damn what you have to say, asking if there's anything she can do. When you're with her, you have her full attention.

It's the small touches to the shoulder. The hugs of old friends reunited. Kisses on the cheek. Small private smiles. Other gestures of affection.

Most of her friends also happen to be men, and many of them are single.

But House doesn't worry as much about that as he used to. She's wearing his ring. Their son is at home being babysat by his grandmother. He knows he has the first and largest spot in her heart.

Which is why, when she looks up and over at the bar, and suddenly yelps out, "Is that J.J. Redick?" he just follows her gaze and starts laughing a little as he spots the former Duke legend that he'd recognize if only because she's one of his biggest fans.

"Go on," he says, and watches her get up from the table, cross the club, and she's soon introducing herself with a handshake and a smile.

History in the making: college basketball's best player meets its first female coach.

Greg House is both amused and feeling a little spark of jealousy flare inside of him. It dies when, in mid-dialogue with the Duke shooter, she turns to look back at him and gives a wave and a smile she wouldn't give to anyone else.

Everyone is close to her, but no one is closer than her husband is.

Title: Catch Your Breath
Characters/Pairing: Greg House/Brittany House
Prompt: #4 -- Intimacy
Word Count: 345
Rating: G
Summary: One spring night in Los Angeles.
Author's Notes: This is spun entirely off of a story J.J. Redick told the other day on FOX Sports' The Best Damn Sports Show Period, and so I have to thank him for borrowing it here and making my own use of it. The companion piece to "Begin To Fall," from Brittany's POV.

She's sitting in a club across from her husband, nursing a pina colada. Her eyes are locked on his, one hand outstretched to toy lightly with the backs of his fingers. She could recite back to you what he's said for the last ten minutes word for word.

These little things are important to her. Whether it's with her husband, a friend or just a colleague, she believes in love and friendship. The little extra contact or gesture to show the people in her life that they matter. After a long time of being told she didn't matter, she doesn't want anyone to feel like they're not important to her.

After all, remove just one and her life is different.

Remove Greg and her entire life as she knows it would be completely different. She's had plenty of time to think on that one and she doesn't like it very much.

She's just thinking on that again when she looks past him and sees a young face she's seen before. Twentysomething, jet black hair, well-dressed, with an easy smile. It takes her about five seconds to place him. "Is that J.J. Redick?" she blurts, and Greg is just smiling and looking with her because he knows she's hopeless.

Brittany drags herself up and goes across the bar to introduce herself to the young guy only about two weeks older than she is, whose jersey she has hanging in her closet. "Excuse me," she says, with a smile and an offered hand, "I just had to introduce myself. Brittany House, Princeton Tigers."

He takes her hand with a smile. "You coach for them, don't you?" he says, and she nods proudly. "Yeah, I've heard of you. That's really awesome, what you're doing."

"Thank you." She chuckles, and then she turns and waves and smiles at her husband. "You see that guy over there?" she says. "That's my husband. I wouldn't be able to do this without him."

Redick's eyes follow hers and he grins. "He's a lucky guy," he says.

She grins. "I'm a luckier woman."
