House M.D. -- Greg House/Brittany House -- "Image Game"

Mar 28, 2006 19:13

Title: Image Game
Characters/Pairing: Greg House/Brittany House
Word Count: 267
Rating: PG
Summary: It's all in the appearances.
Author's Notes: Inspired by my own battles with ageism and sexism. This one goes out to all the people who get weird looks and snide comments in public, just for being who they are. I feel your pain, and so does the muse.

She knows how this looks.

Twenty-one years old, living at the end of a gun, carrying the child of a man twice her age. The muttered comments and the disapproving looks are all filed away. They think it's a shame she ruined her life with the job and a sin she's wasting it with a man like that.

It pisses her off more than anything else.

She wants to say that wasting her life has saved their lives a dozen times over, and that they don't know a damn thing about who he is. Sometimes she just wants to throw a left hook, but that's not polite.

Because she knows exactly how things look.

In any given room, she is the center of attention. She doesn't mind; she likes to get to spend time with people she knows. She speaks, they listen. She asks politely, they do as she says. She is their golden girl.

Everyone has a Brittany House story.

Two of them are ex-lovers. Two of them could have been. Several of them owe her their jobs. At least four or five owe her their lives. In the event that it comes down to her or the President, most of them would trust her judgment over that of their chief executive. She can do almost no wrong.

But when Greg walks into the room, everything changes. She can't see anyone else but the man she loves, the man she married.

She may be the world's center of attention, but he is her center of attention.

Fuck how it looks, because he's all she can see.
