Author's Notes: This is my first crack at writing this pairing so hopefully I didn't butcher their characterizations.
Could immortals over work themselves? The answer was a resounding yes! There had been a string of murders that had all the detectives in homicide working around the clock. Nick was no exception. During the day when he should have been sleeping he found himself reading case files trying to find anything that he or Schanke might have missed. This had gone on for weeks until they got their first break and subsequently wrapped things up having caught their suspects. By that time Nick was feeling all 800 years of his age and was in great need of a break.
Dragging himself into his loft, he immediately collapsed on the sofa. Oh yeah, vampires could feel pain all right! His whole body felt like it might fall apart at any moment. He was absolutely exhausted and here he had thought that vampires were above that sort of thing.
"Oh Nicholas, I'll never understand why you insist on working so hard," a beautifully amused voice called.
His eyes darted open to see Janette standing upstairs looking down at him. He forced himself to sit up right.
"You know I like my job."
"Yes, yes I know. Did you finally catch your man?" she asked teasingly.
Her flirtatious laughter seemed to cause his body to stir. It also didn't escape his notice that she was wearing almost nothing. Suddenly he wasn't feeling very tired anymore. Within seconds he found himself pulling her into his arms.
"I'd much rather catch a woman," he answered wrapping his arms tightly around her waist.
"Really? Were you thinking of someone in particular?" she asked, sensually licking her lips.
"Yes, I definitely have someone in mind," he said leaning toward her.
Their lips met in a passionate and hungry kiss. All the fatigue and weariness he felt just seemed to melt away and was instantly replaced with raw lust and longing. He had to have her.
