The waves at his feet (blue, red, and then something in between) look the same, and the red sky still looks familiar, but he has never been here before.
The world is new, or perhaps it’s just young again but he has never felt so old in his life.
He remembers little but the stale air in the cockpit, Ayanami’s face staring at him, screams (his own, and everyone else's) and then Kaworu’s soft voice.
Kaworu had smiled at him, again, with a white face and red eyes and he had fallen into those eyes and landed at this beach. He is not alone (Asuka is curled up a few feet away, with bruises around her neck) and he has his arms wrapped around his knees.
It’s quiet, except for the push, pull of the waves that inch towards his feet and he thinks he will stay here until he stops breathing.
I am the words “I love you”, Kaworu had said to him. Shinji is not sure he understands this any more than he had before, when similar words had echoed in NERV’s showers. But the waves hiss and break at his feet, and he feels blood running through his fingers, his arms, his legs, and for the second time in his life he feels alive.
He watches Asuka walk away and he lets her go.
He thinks he will never look at the ocean without hearing a soft voice humming Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
The world is new, but Shinji Ikari alone will have waves that can smile and whisper “and I think I’ve finally found a way to be with you everyday”.
He stays until after the sun sets, and then he leaves footprints across the sand and his heart among the white waves.
