You lie on his bedroom floor and look up at his face. His arms are crossed behind his head, and you can see the corner of his mouth move when he says that he should be the one on the floor.
The sheets stick to your skin, and you can feel the sweat on your forehead, your neck and on your palm. You watch him, and let your fingertips brush against the sheets, the blanket resting against your stomach. Your fingers rise, fall as you breathe, and there’s a familiar twinge near your stomach. You blush, fold your arm across your waist, and rub the inside of your elbow.
You think that if you turned your head just a little, leaned on your elbow and parted your lips you could kiss him.
What do you want to talk about, he asks, and you find the words slipping past your lips. He listens. You wonder if you would have told these things to anyone who asked, or only because he did.
You stare at another unfamiliar ceiling. You remember Misato’s cold fingers against the back of your hand, Ayanami’s face staring at you from behind glass, and Asuka’s screams through your headset, and when he asks you if you hate humans, you reply that you don’t think so.
You turn to look at him, and he’s smiling, and the blush across your cheeks spreads down your neck.
He tells you he was born to meet you and you don’t reply.
