Title: the words 'i love you'
Author: Rooney
Pairing: Kaworu/Shinji
Theme: Romance
Rating: PG
Words: 248
Notes: Inexcusably late entry for the "romance" theme. Spoilers for episode twenty four.

Gate 13 opens, and Kaworu smiles at him.

Shinji blinks, stares and fumbles with his headphones.

Kaworu smiles with closed eyes (you weren’t waiting here for me, were you?) and steps foreword. The gate shuts.

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony plays between them through his headphones, and he tries to cover the sound with his fingers. He murmurs a reply, and ducks his head to hide the permanent red stained across his cheeks. He thinks of Misato’s apartment, of the empty beer cans, empty rooms and unfamiliar ceilings, and words slip past his lips.

Kaworu stops, sticks his hands in his front pockets, leans down and asks to come with him to the showers.

There’s a clink of buckets and a splash; Shinji (eyes dropped, faced stained pink) turns to look at Kaworu.

The lights flicker, fall, and Kaworu reaches over and rests his hand over Shinji’s.

He hates that his eyes are at Kaworu’s waist when he stands and his replies are just words, fragments, but Kaworu turns, looks down, and smiles again.

I’m saying I love you, he says.

Shinji knows that he can’t remember anyone saying these words to him. His mother is nothing more than a faint memory of smiles and a soft voice (he can’t remember her face, and his father keeps the old photographs), and his father looks at him over thin glasses and says nothing. But this boy says he loves him, and when Kaworu asks, Shinji follows him back to his room.
