The afternoon was warm on his face when he awakened, and so the mountain man let himself linger on the grass, his eyes fully lidded so as to feel the sun without being blinded.
When at last he came out of his basking, his eyes opened on something warmer and brighter than the sun.
The strange gaze did not blind him, but it did mesmerize him so that when the boy turned from him and scampered back to the lake, the mountain man did not notice the boy's tail until it slapped against the surface just before he dove beneath.
