All this comes to an end.
During summer evenings
I miss your company.
"I want to come home," are the first words Dan hears when he picks up the phone. He doesn't say anything. Jones is breathing loudly on the other side. The words are hanging in the air like unused washing lines.
"I want you to come home," he says then and waits. Jones makes an ungraceful sound, sucking up snot.
"Is anything going to change?"
Dan doesn't know what to say to that. Probably not. He will always be an insensitive bastard. "I want you to come home," he repeats and hears the tears underneath Jones' humorless chuckle.
"Please," he adds.
