Lately I've really been getting into my first responder class. I am seriously considering pursuing it for long-term employment: there are some local resources for completing EMT-Basic training, but if I wanted to pursue becoming a paramedic (the highest level of prehospital care), I would need to commit to a two-year program at a technical college in another area.
I think that I may ask my advanced writing (business) professor to give me some pointers on writing a letter of inquiry, and composing one such to the ambulance company in town. They also provide EMT training but it is private, and I'm not sure whether they would employ someone without prior certification. It's something to ask about, certainly.
I signed up as a volunteer with Minnesota's Medical Reserve Corps, which is basically a mobilization unit for health care volunteers in disaster situations. The earliest orientation isn't until May 12th; it's during a final time, but I spoke to the professor and she agreed to let me take the final with another section of the class.
The weather for the last week has been absolutely amazing. I've been alternating between feeling very happy (more sun!) and slightly angsty (because I've been too busy to spend much of it outside). I'm itching to get some gardening projects started, even though I feel like I ought to have started all that a month or so ago. I brought my bike in for a tune up: they had it done by Friday, but I was out of town all weekend and busy today, so I haven't been able to pick it up yet. Tomorrow, though! I also need to get a new helmet, reflector, and D-lock. Alas, expenses.
I started going out with a guy a few weeks ago. I'm slightly nervous-mostly personal anxieties about relationships, but a little bit because he's absolutely amazing and I'm scared of screwing up and ruining a good friendship-but things have been going well. I shall cease writing on that topic now lest I start gushing.
I only have eleven days of class left! In that time, I have two more homework assignments for the math class of doom, two exams for the same class; a paper and one exam for my philosophy class; a revision of an early writing assignment, a resume/cover letter, the completion of my analysis & recommendation report and an oral presentation of the same, all for my business writing class; and the conclusion of my first responder class, which will consist of mostly in-class work and a big final exam that will determine whether I receive Red Cross certification.
I'm still super-excited for the end of this semester: I'll be walking in Commencement, then flying off to Toronto, and by the time I get back, shipments from my CSA farm will be starting. The nerve-wracking thing will be finding full-time employment in June-and also health insurance!-but I am trying not to let that shake me up too much anymore. I have plans that require some money, but I'm young and it won't hurt for them to wait a little longer anyway. Taking the time to breathe and get out in the sun and goof off is more important right now, or... well, after I graduate.
