Today is one of those days where I am reminded what a liberal hippie place Austin is. Whole Foods (which is HQ in Austin) has decided to stop selling live lobster because, "We are committed to really treating animals with compassion and respect; we put a lot of emphasis on humane treatment," said Margaret Wittenberg, vice president for quality standards at Whole Foods. "The lobster is no different."
In an effort to improve conditions they tried the following: Whole Foods had been testing an alternative in its New York City and New England stores, where the crustaceans were kept in special "lobster condos" made out of PVC pipes that allowed them to have the solitude they prefer.
Seriously? Lobster condos? Oh my gosh.
Of course in order to treat all animals as equals they will also be reviewing the treatment of clams and oysters and have already pulled soft-shell crabs.

Have we all gone slightly retarded? They can sell frozen (and humanely processed) lobsters but not live ones because of the crowded conditions? And did I read something about “lobster condos?” I think that’s the answer to the permanent housing problem for the Katrina victims. I’m sure FEMA is in negotiations with Whole Foods right now for the purchase of the abandon condos.

They should stop selling meat and vegetables also. I mean a live BEING had to be killed to get the meat. And what does the mother vegetable FEEL when her little darlings are PULLED UP BY THE ROOTS and taken to this “organic” store?
And one for the liberals:

To everyone who has something to say about “humans” being more important than lobsters or other creatures, your arrogance is astounding. Perhaps when we learn to see every living form with greater respect, admiration and humility, we’ll learn to be more humane to one another as well. And no, I’m not a “crazy left wing liberal” who is advocating worldwide vegetarianism. Many cultures thank the spirit of animals that sustain them through work/food-we’d do well to steal a little of that humility.
