This is brought over from our twitter discussion, because it is too long to have in 140 characters :)
iHollaback is a new promotion from the
HollabackNYC website. While I think NYC is the first one, this phenomenon has spread over the globe to multiple cities and countries.
The premise is that women and LGBTQ individuals who are harassed on the street can take a photo, and upload it to the website. The blogs exist in the same format, just on a time delay.
I think this is a great thing. I think that there are so few opportunities for women to report their harassment and not get revictimized, and this use of technology is a good thing.
I also think there should be some recourse for harassers who get posted on these websites. If they can explain their actions, and they are not harassment, they should be able to get their pictures and stories removed. This, however, is a tricky thing. So many times men explain away their harassment as "I was just trying to talk to her" or "shes taking it the wrong way" that harassment is so much about how the person feels.
I only agree to this "outing" as it is 1) done in public spaces, 2) done in full view of other people (if any are around), 3) are illegal. (For information, see
HollabackNYC NYC Harassment Statute.)
