An update on Anderson's sister -- she managed to call and leave a voicemail for her fiance. She has arrived safely in New Delhi, though after
some of today's news, it doesn't look like she'll be back in Nepal in the near future. She'll temporarily doing some of the same consular work she did in Nepal after they get settled in. I guess she's been assigned a roommate that she knows from Nepal... but doesn't really like. Oops.
Yesterday my parents came over to Anderson's parents' house for dinner before we all went to see Cabaret at my school. It was a beautiful production. The set was great, the costumes and makeup are fabulous, and the lights make it all look pretty good. It was opening night, and a Thursday at that. A few parts were a bit rough, but a really nice show, overall. I wasn't quite sold on the end, but perhaps that was just the way it's written.
After the show, Anderson headed off to work and I puttered around a bit before settling down with a book. I bought
Shadow of the Giant on a whim the other week, and decided to read it. I was up until 4:30am and finished it. The book is great, living up to the precedent set by Ender's Shadow. Bean is such a fantastic character, and I love how the book manages to be simultaneously sci-fi, political thriller, military strategy, and a love story without seeming incongruous. His characters are great, and I hope he picks up the few dangling threads for another book. His Memory of Earth series pushed the timeline two books too far, but I think another generation would still be close enough to be compelling.
I hate that about good books -- you rush to finish them and find out what happens only to want more to read. I'm interested to see what happens when Harry Potter is over. J.K. Rowling is the richest woman in the U.K. and never has to lift a finger ever again. All of her subsequent books would be compared to Harry Potter - and what if they were disappointing? She doesn't need the success, but how terrible would it be to fall from so high? I suppose we'll all find out in the next few years.
