Wow, what a horrible drive.
We had planned to leave for Chicago before the sun was up yesterday, but after a late night, opted for some much-needed sleep. It was a good thing we were well rested because it took all of our focus and effort to drive! It snowed horribly the entire way. The interstate was closed between just-past-Hudson and Menomenie because of multiple pileups.
The options to pull off the highway and wait or to stop for the night were always there, but we drove slowly and carefully and made it in one piece! It was particularly poor visibility around Madison, Wisconsin, and if it had been snowing in Chicago, we probably would have stopped. Luckily, the snow stopped completely about an hour south of Madison, and we made reasonable time from there.
Average speed for the trip? About 40 mph. Normal time? About 7 hours. Our time? 10.5 hours. Our hosts had relaxing beverages and snacks waiting upon our arrival. More soon!
