So here's what happened:
We run 4 registers at our store on the weekends, and I had just finished closing out the cashier at the 4th register, the one closest to the door. I had did his drop of $491 and holding that money in cash in my hands, signed him out, printed his paperwork, and then walked over to the tasting table (which is also near the door) for a quick taste of wine and to mingle with Jim. I didn't stay there too long because I had quite a bit of cash in my pocket, so off the the office to drop it in the safe. As I was walking back to the front, I saw this guy with his shirt over most of his face and thought how strange and I felt a little bit of panic. I pushed a couple out of the way and said "what the hell!!" because I knew what was happening and couldn't stop myself from rushing up front. I stopped just short of shouting "is that a gun", when I realized hell yes it was a gun, and didn't want to cause any more panic. The guy saw me look at him and I'll never forget him looking at me eye to eye as he showed me his gun, then walked out the door.
I still kept rushing to the registers as Lori (one of the managers) gets on the intercom, "all managers to the front NOW". The store got robbed at gun point, at 3:15 in the afternoon, store full of people. They robbed the 3rd register, which was the one closest to the door that was open. And everything that I have just written happened with in a span of maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Two guys, one with a 44 revolver with long barrel (and what looked like a silencer) nonchalantly walk in, point the gun at Jim telling him not to move, then head over to Lori who had just opened that register. They stole the customer's money then demanded Lori to open the register, she did so compliantly once she saw the gun. I think this is the point that I had realized what was happening, and the one guy with the gun saw me headed to toward them. I guess the thought I was being kind of bold, which in retrospect, I was. They only got away with $123, and didn't hit up any other registers. Jim called 911 from his cell phone and I called the sheriffs department. Tammy urged all customers who were witnesses to stay till the police got there and all others that we thought it best for them to leave, and we closed the store until after the police left. Which by the way, it took them about 20 minutes to get there... Another crazy thing is that as the two guys were walking out of the door, the guy coming in is one of our regulars who happened to be an off duty cop. He said this was the one day that he didn't have his badge or his gun in his car.
Then what made me so nervous is that the sheriff said from the video that they look like members of the bloods. (shuddddddder). And it was just me, Tammy and Danielle closing that night.... not cool. Our area manager sent over two more guys from different stores to run "security" for us during the evening. We ended the night pretty calm, but damn...
We're all pretty lucky it didn't get any worse than that. I think I shook the whole rest of the day. And most of today.
Oh, if I can get a copy of the surveillance video, I'll share it with you.
So much for a boring Saturday.
