Maryland Music Scene-it Primer

Dec 31, 2009 13:38

I met up with an old friend for drinks last night, and over the course of conversation it became clear that he didn't know about the current boon of good music with overt Maryland ties. Both of us spent a lot of time listening to crappy local acts back in High School and directly afterward. If you spent enough time hanging around that circuit you'd eventually come under the suspicion that Maryland musicians were chronically incapable of writing decent melodies or displaying any musical talent.

This list is in no ways complete. There are quite a few heavy hitters missing (Dan Deacon, Oxes, Lafayette Gilchrist) and doesn't include any punk thrash (a la Perestroika or New Flesh) nor "mainstream" acts.

They're all from Maryland, and anyone from the area could probably guess as much from the title of their last album ("Merriweather Post Pavillion"), but they're centered in Brooklyn these days.

McCombs is actually a bit of a nomad, but he started to get noticed while living in Baltimore for an extended stretch and he's been mistaken for a Maryland musician ever since.
