New York, New York! and thoughts from the train.

Hi there from New York! I always feel like I have to post to LJ when I am traveling, so I can put something other than Boxborough in the "Location" tag. :) I can't write long, but just wanted to say hello and let you know I made it here OK. I'm in town for a medical device manufacturers' tradeshow (I went to the west coast version in Anaheim in February... this is the east coast one). Today was travel - which was on the Acela Express, more about that in a sec - and booth setup at the Javits Center.

My day started fairly early with midnightcoder driving me to the Amtrak station in Westwood. I quite liked taking the Acela. It's like a plane on the inside, but I could plug in my laptop and still use my cell phone... kind of like a long tubular office. :)

While I was on the train I typed up this in a spare Notepad window:

THOUGHTS FROM THE TRAIN

When you're on the acela, getting to Providence takes almost no time at all. How amazing.

Doing graphic design work while on a train is exceedingly difficult. My mouse keeps rolling towards me. And when I use it, the train always has to roll around and make my mouse work all wobbly.

Good news is, this is much more comfortable than a plane. I can actually stretch out my legs. Ahhhh.

Strangely enough, I ran in to a former coworker of mine while I was getting on the train. She is headed down to the same tradeshow I'm going to. She now works for a competitor. So how much should I tell her?

We are now going past water and pretty white boats. At a great speed, of course. Ooh, how scenic. If you can see it in the 2.5 seconds it takes to flash by you. This must be Rhode Island. It should take us, oh, 5 minutes to cross the state. :)

It would be really easy to fall asleep on this train. I better not, though. Not only am I supposed to be working right now, but I don't particularly want to wake up and find myself in Washington DC today. Not that I have anything against DC. But my tradeshow isn't there.

Maybe on the way home. If I'm tired then I will take a nap. Yeah.

Just passed Westport, CT. So, my computer's MP3 player finally decides to play Genesis's "Driving the Last Spike." How wonderfully appropriate. There's a line about "cutting through God's country like a knife," and really that's what it feels like to be on this train... I see houses and businesses on either side of me and it makes me wonder, what was it like before the train line was built? Oh well, no time for philosophical thoughts when there is SEO to be done.

This song would be so much more exciting if we were going full speed. We're maybe going 30 mph now... a mere crawl. Must be approacing a station.

I also wanted to give a shoutout to etoilepb. We'd have caught up this evening but she was not feeling well. :( Instead, I ate dinner at the hotel restaurant, and did some serious people-watching out the nonexistant window (it was one of those deals where they have the big folding floor-to-ceiling door/windows, and they were open since it's nice out).

OK, time to go iron or otherwise prepare my "team uniform" for tomorrow. Talk to y'all later :)
