Summary:  For three days, battle has raged around the city of Tar Valon. In the White Tower two young Accepted attend the Amyrlin Seat and her Keeper as they await word of the outcome. Purely by chance, Moiraine Damodred and Siuan Sanche are on duty when the Keeper foretells the rebirth of the Dragon, the world's only hope of winning the fight against the Dark One.

Why I am reading this.  A prequel for a series I love.

My thoughts.  I am huge fan of the Wheel of Time series.  I stumbled across them a while back and have loved just about every book in the series.  So, I was willing to give this a chance even though I don’t particularly like prequels.  Especially when the series is not even finished.  Sadly, Robert Jordan passed away and handed the torch to Brandon Sanderson (whom did a really good job on the Gathering Storm).

This book never worked for me.  I enjoyed Moraine in the series, but her relationship with Siuan Sanche never felt right to me.  It felt like they took the relationship of the girls from the books and tried to make a comparison with them.  Yes, they wanted to tell the story as to how they came across the Prophecy of the Dragon, which isn’t a bad idea, but it fell flat.  For the most part Moraine and Siuan did nothing but annoy me.

This is why I don’t like prequels.  Most of the time it just feels like someone wants to get another book out in the world they created, and in this case, there was not enough material to really warrant this book.

You finally get to see how Moraine and Lan met.  Wooh boy.  That never really interested me in the first place.  Lan was one of my favorite characters in the series and although he was still interesting here, his relationship with Moraine was ok at best in this one.

The writing style doesn’t bother me most of the time because I am interested in the world.  But it is really slow and that showed this time.  I have heard other people say that and I never really agreed before this.  But it felt like it took forever to read this book.

Best thing about book.  I love the world.

Worst thing about book.  If I have to hear Siuan talk about silverpike one more time, I am going to scream.
