why does everyone have to try and be someone else. like when bubble and squeak writes new music we don't try and emulate chingy. and even if we attempted to resemble a great artist such as said artist, that wouldn't make us great at what we did. we would have to earn it. great bands earn reputations for being great at what they do, which just so happens to be unique most of the time. when i heard the new coheed cd i wasn't looking for new pink floyd, only roger waters can make pink floyd pink floyd again. i wasn't even looking for a reincarnation of cliff burton on this record, despite how much i may want it now that i've said it. i just wanted coheed and cambria. not prize fighter inferno meets every time i die meets generic rock progressions meets unprepared references to previous albums meets only a shadow of their former self. i understand bands progress and develop, but i would hardly consider this progressive music in any sense. i don't understand how one might acquire more musical knowledge and more control over his/her art and instrument and "proceed to digress." as you can see it is contradictory by nature. it's a cop out. when one fails to continue to challenge the process stagnation ensues.
you wanna know in actuality how i know this record is not as good, and this may sound uneducated but i'll explain. there has been more of a positive response to this record than previous coheed records. pop music is more widely accepted and enjoyed than progressive music. pop music is defined by simplistic musical progressions, strophic form, tonal melodic passages and... MEDIA HYPE!!! it is music for the masses, loved by all because it doesn't take an active listener to understand it. bands that exemplify these characteristics would be, just for example's sake, cuz i couldn't possibly pick specific bands for ulterior motives, the foo fighters and velvet revolver. ok i lied, delve not too far beyond the surface and you will see that coheed has now worked with a producer whose credits include the foo fighters and velvet revolver. i loved the previous albums because songs were through composed, placing form and function behind concept and aesthetics. also the studio drummer on the new record straight up sucks and makes the rhythm section more generic than that of an original casio keyboard. josh eppard wasn't fantastic but at least he played open handed which made his style more unique.
as much as you may view this rant as a snob's orgasm, you can't really argue the points. you could make the argument as to how much of it applies to the new co&ca record, but i could probably provide more evidence to refute your claims.
in the words of paula cole, where have all the cowboys gone? where have they gone indeed.
