Personality/Background summary:
Sanji's pretty cool and composed -- and often annoyed, and therefore snarky. At first glance he doesn't really seem all that nice a person -- though more disinterested than mean -- but compliment his cooking? And you've totally got one of the brightest smiles ever. Or well, he's disinterested around men, at least. Around women, it's like Sanji does a 180: hearts flying everywhere, tears and dramatics and theatrical posing and abject servile humility and goddess-worship and oh god he gets so flaming around them I have no idea how the hell he expects to win them over andfgkjdhff -- oh yeah, and he'll totally flip back and forth between the two within a split second, swearing and yelling at the dude in one direction only to turn around and be all tripping over himself toward the girl in the other.
But he's not gay. Totally not gay. Even if he's flouncing around behind practically every woman he meets and is all fawning and limp-wristed and bubbly around them -- not gay. All those frilly aprons and stuff -- he's a cook, it's like necessary or something, OK? And forget he can do like vertical splits and probably stick his legs behind his head and stuff, that just means he's flexible, ok? FLEXIBLE. And he's terrified of spiders and might scream like a girl if one gets near him but --
SHUT UP. SHUT UP, OK? He can break your FACE.
Unless you're a girl, and then he'll probably just weep all over your shoes and wonder what he's doing wrong, or something. ):
But anyway, there's a Sanji that Sanji wishes he could be: tough, badass, dangerous, all that stuff but dependable and loyal with a golden heart -- someone else's hero -- you know, all that good stuff that guys in adventure stories always are. And the weird part is that while there isn't a woman in sight -- though he isn't really aware that he is -- Sanji actually kind of manages to be like that. But then a pretty girl walks in and he stumbles all over himself to do anything and everything to make her happy -- and immediately loses all the toughness points he's ever earned, like, ever.
But yeah. It's weird, with Sanji and women: it's like he tries too hard but doesn't try enough at the same time. He'll make himself look like a moron listening to their every command and showering them with compliments (about qualities of theirs that they don't actually possess and exist only in Sanji-vision) -- but ask him to actually get romantically attached to something (or someone), and he's backing off as fast as he can. And that's pretty much true in regard to everything else, too: it's not that he thinks it's a weakness or anything -- he's just kind of got no idea how to do it. So he sticks to hearsay, you know? Princes and Princesses and fairy tales. Why not go with what works? (Unfortunately, this doesn't actually work in real life.)
Aside from that, though, he's a pretty serious, down-to-earth guy -- although that can kinda sometimes be hard to tell. Not as upbeat as Luffy, not as strong as Zoro, not as smart as Usopp -- but you know, that doesn't mean he's not happy and strong and smart, just somewhere in between. And though he doesn't show it much (especially with Zoro, stupid shitty marimo) he cares a lot about all his friends -- and a lot of his enemies, too. He won't hurt a lady, even if she's trying to kill him. He won't let anyone go hungry, even if they're enemies. And it's hard to say who's the most mentally mature out of the Straw Hat guys, but it could well be Sanji --
