"This is weird, isn't it?"

"You bet your ass it is." McCoy suddenly realized he was still touching Scotty and retracted his hand. "But we're here for the kid," he said gruffly.

"Right. Pavel. He's quite an interesting young man, isn't he?"

"You have no idea."

"How long have you been seeing him?"

McCoy shuffled his feet. "Long enough. How long have you had your eye on him?"

Scotty shrugged and averted his eyes. "I dunno. I guess I noticed him when he started showing an interest in me."

That was a lie, McCoy could tell. He was willing to bet the chief engineer had been eying the kid since the moment Scotty had set foot on the Enterprise's bridge. McCoy remembered very vividly when he, himself, had taken notice of Pavel. The kid had just spouted some crazy plan to catch up to the Narada (during which McCoy had taken note of how pretty the kid was and how young he looked) and McCoy had been thoroughly impressed. Of course, he hadn't been about to admit that, so he'd chosen to be a hard-ass and give the kid grief about his age ( ... )

"Please, Uncle Scotty," Pavel begged, and McCoy noted that the kid's voice was sounding more and more childlike. Pavel enjoyed being "the baby", but it still always took a while for Pavel to get truly comfortable in his role.

Scotty smiled and chuckled, rubbing at his chin a bit and shaking his head. "Wow. This is... new."

"Too weird for you?" asked McCoy. "'Cause we'll get along fine without you, you know."

"No, no, I want to." Scotty began to get out of his boots. "Just, you know, it's weird. Hot, but... weird."

"Yeah, I know what you mean," McCoy sighed, still petting Pavel. It was weird, but what two consenting adults and... one slightly underage teenager did in the privacy of their personal quarters was nobody's business... sort of ( ... )
