Jim sees the boy standing by himself, ramrod straight against the brick wall not-watching the other boys play basketball, and he doesn't think twice. He marches over, tugs on the boy's arm, not looking back once.

Under the shade of a large oak tree, Jim meets eyes with the boy for the first time, and never has he seen eyes so dark, so wide, so still, so strange. They don't move, he doesn't blink, and his mouth is a straight, pink-red line against skin white as a sheet. "My name's Jim," he tells the boy, eyes flicking to pointy ears for the first time. His own eyes widen only marginally. "Jim Kirk. What's your name?"

The boy stares, and Jim stares back, strangely fascinated by the perfect geometrical line of his dark black bangs. The boy doesn't say anything, not a twitch of a muscle or an errant strand of hair in the light wind. "We can't be friends," Jim says, hand on his hip, "if you don't tell me your name." The boy still stares, but Jim sees him blink, just once. Jim thinks he's looking at his feet; he's shy, Jim thinks ( ... )

Thank you so much! I've added a new part, with the boys at age 8. This one is slightly longer - I hope you like it!
