And to get us started, here's my 'shipwide broadcast:
I saw "The Cage" back when I was in high school, but didn't really start 'shipping Pike and Number One until I read DC Fontana's tie-in novel Vulcan's Glory. After seeing Star Trek (2009) I started writing Pike/Number One fic almost immediately. Now it's 9 months later, and my love continues to remain steadfast and true.
My fave scene from "The Cage" is when she sets the phaser pistol to overload, and he acknowledges her move with a crisp nod of his head. They are on the same wavelength, they would kill or die for each other, and they trust each other implicitly. I also love the Briefing Room, where Number One is very HELL YEAH THE CHICK'S IN CHARGE. and Pike's adorkable utter-crap-with-girls moment when he accidently tells Number One he can't get used to women on the bridge except for her--she's "different, of course". It's one of those moments where you just have to laugh, because he's SUCH A DORK. Yet she still totally fantasises about him anyway, even when he opens his mouth and sticks his Starfleet issue booted foot right in.
The first fan fiction I ever read for the couple was
A Fresh Coat of Paint by
minerva_fan and it is still one of the hottest things I've read. I also utterly adore
Unconditioned Responses by
minerva_fan,
Count the Stars by
igrockspock, and
Stardust by
djinn_fic.
In terms of AOS continuity, I started with
Faith by
calapine, and then there was
It's Not All About Simplicity by
possibly_thrice ,
The School of Sensualist Thought by
halfpenny_press,
No Reason to Waste a Good Bottle of Wine by
igrockspock. And I'm completely and utterly hooked on
boosette's
Standardverse Continuity.
I think part of the reason I fell madly in love with them is because they're grown-ups. I've spent a chunk of the last decade shipping people in their teens and 20s, and there's something about mature adults in love that I find deeply, deeply appealing. Even though they may jump each other like hormone-crazed teenagers every once in a while, and have sex all over the bridge (c'mon. You would too!), what I love best is that they are grown-ups having a real relationship--whether it's in secret while still aboard the Enterprise, or later after he's been made Fleet Captain and she gets her Captain's stripes and takes the bridge of the Yorktown, they may not be the white-picket-fence marrying kind, but there's in addition to a depth of passion a rock-solid friendship, complete and total trust, and tremendous mutual respect thing going.
(Even my Mirror Universe fic, as twisted as it very certainly is, involves a certain level of mutual respect and affection. And, you know, bondage and knifeplay.)
As for songs, I think for the Mirror Universe it's always always going to be "Protège Moi" by Placebo, and for TOS it's "Cry (If You Want To)" by the Holly Cole trio, while the AOS Pike/Number One's themesong is "Set Fire To The Third Bar" by Snow patrol and Martha Wainright.
My ALL TIME fave novel is still
Vulcan's Glory by Dorothy Fontana though I also adore Early Voyages and
Star Trek: Crew comics, and the short story
Enterprise Logs: "Conflicting Natures" by Jerry Oltion.
My fan-casting remains Jen Garner (hence her being Number One in the banner above). I want so badly to see her on the bridge of the Yorktown, kicking ass and taking names. But I wouldn't say no to Pike getting a late-night comm and her being snuggled under the sheets when he gets up to answer the hail, either...
Lastly, in addition to leading this wacky crew, I'm completely up for contributing fanfic, fan art, icons and mixes.
