Ok, had this thought. Does anyone remember the Next Gen episode where Worf was coming back from a ba't'leth competition and passed through some sort of twist in time and space. Once back on the Enterprise he kept jumping back and forth to different realities. One of those realities had a Cardassian on the bridge.
Now my thought is this, please stay with me.
In the New Trek movie, in the bar scene Uhura asks for a Cardassian Sunrise. As far as I know there was only one drink in Trek-verse that had sunrise or sunset in the name- the Samarian Sunset. So why is there a drink named after a species that we do not see any contact with for at least another 100 years.
In normal time, there had been random cases of Cardassians being exiled to other worlds prior, but full contact didn't occur until 20 years before Next Gen. This contact was actually an attempted invasion.
Back to New Trek, my thinking is that you do not name popular drinks after invading forces. This suggests that this earlier then scheduled contact between the Federation and Cardassia was friendly.
So my thought is thus: After the Kelvin incident, Starfleet put a stop to exploring more in that specific region of space and headed out in another direction. By exploring this new direction they came into contact with Cardassia earlier. This contact was good, and 100 years, and many a Cardassian Sunrise later, there are Cardassians running around in Star Fleet.
Taking us back to that one reality that Worf shifted into that had a Cardassian bridge crew member. The same reality that was formed because of Nero.
