Summary: For the barest moment, Spock forgets that he is old.
Author’s Notes: "How did you find me?" seems like a very presumptive and illogical question, given everything Spock Prime must have deduced about the new timeline he was in. This is my take on what he was thinking when he asked it.
For the barest moment, Spock forgets that he is old. He forgets all the years that have passed since he last saw his friend; he forgets that he is an ambassador, not a first officer, that he is wearing a Vulcan snow coat, not his science blues. He has just witnessed again the tragedy of sentience gone mad, the destruction one being can maliciously inflict upon others. He has always felt alone in the universe at such times and, as always, the appearance of Jim Kirk forestalls that notion. Of course he is not alone - Jim is here. Jim is here, and soon everything will be set to rights, because Jim can work miracles of probability. He can succeed where anyone else would fail.
"How did you find me?" he blurts without thinking, and the confusion on Jim's face shatters the illusion. Jim had no idea he was here. Spock is not young anymore. He has not been on the Enterprise in decades. He and Jim were not on a mission gone awry together. He wrought this tragedy by himself.
And yet, for all of Jim's puzzlement, the comfort of his presence does not fade. Whatever else may be happening in this universe, Spock is looking at his friend; his friend who is burning star-hot with life, and it is a sight Spock had thought he would never see again. A sight he has missed with illogical intensity. Even with his moment in the past gone and his logic returned to him, he cannot shake his sense that he will be alright. He and his younger counterpart in this timeline. They will both get through this. Jim will either lead or drag them through this, as he always does.
