Went to go see Sweeney Todd again with Jo last night. She was freaking ecstatic, head over heels, because her name is Joanna so she was like "Johnny's singing to me!" It was pretty funny.
After I saw it the first time, I was left with an awe feeling over the music. The way it just flows like a waltz, or is very loud and deliberate; the mixing with major and minor tones was awesome! Yay for dissonance. The organ at the beginning makes me freaking...makes me mush in my chair. It's such an incredible instrument that can make something so beautiful or so terrifying. God, that has to be one of my favorite musical pieces of the film (along with "Johanna")- even if it was only for a minute or so. I'm trying to actively listen as well - part of my Ear Training class homework, kind of - so I'm like "Damn it. Is that a seventh chord at the end of that organ solo? Augmented chord??" It's fun. The whole damn music in the opening titles just made me want to get up and start conducting! I want to be in that orchestra!! The horns are fantastic too. Gah! I could go on and on!
But what I'm trying to say is that the music from that really struck me just as Zimmer's POTC scores and Shore's LOTR scores. But Sondheim's arrangements were just that extra powerful push that has made me really think on what I want to do with my life. And I think that's composing. It just...makes sense.
If anyone has sheet music, pass it along! That'd be something I'd love analyzing. I'm going to have to check Senseny....
